IMS is a needling system designed by Dr. Chan Gunn to diagnose and treat myofascial pain syndrome. During IMS, needles can be inserted either at the epicenter of taut, tender muscle bands, or near the spine where the nerve root may have become irritated and supersensitive. Inserting needles deep into shortened muscles will cause a reflex release of the muscle tension which helps reduce pressure on the nerve to alleviate pain and dysfunction. IMS relies heavily on a thorough physical examination of the patient by a certified practitioner.
